What is Service?
One of the definitions of service is: “the action of helping or doing work for someone”. Service or rather this idea of service has been what has made our country, and others around the world strong and livable. People being there to lend a helping hand when things are just too overwhelming.
Now it could be just me, but growing up people performed service not to get something in return, but because it was the right thing to do. Now it’s just like, I’ll do it, but what’s in it for me? Maybe as a whole this has always been the mentality and I just never noticed because it wasn’t the mentality growing up. Maybe things really have changed that much, or maybe it’s just the area that I’m in, and elsewhere it still is very much about doing the service to serve.
I am proud to say that I am involved in an international organization that is very service oriented. Unfortunately I seem to be in an area where there are key people who are all about themselves and the benefit and recognition they can receive. It’s been causing a lot of stress, and a divide among some of the members within this area as well cause some of the current leadership, and current members to leave the organization.
It’s not to say that these people cannot continue to provide service to those in need on their own. But what does it say to those investigating the organization that we can’t come together for five minutes to do what’s best for the community instead of whats’ best for ourselves. What does it tell other members within the organization?
I love serving my community and I hope that I can continue to do so for quite some time to come, and not lose my love of serving because of the politics of being a leader.
